Wakulla County Passes Historic Budget and Millage Rate Reduction

WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. — The Wakulla County Board of Commissioners proudly announces the passage of a historic budget for the fiscal year 2023-2024, totaling $273.6 million. This budget is dedicated to funding essential projects and services aimed at enhancing our community.

Highlights of this remarkable budget include a substantial $17.6 million from property tax revenues, reinforcing our commitment to supporting crucial county services and projects. In addition, a significant portion of $132.2 million in intergovernmental revenues will be used to advance key county initiatives, emphasizing our dedication to partnerships and collaboration.

Further investments include $93.6 million in sewer infrastructure grants, which will play a pivotal role in enhancing our community's infrastructure and environmental stewardship. Wakulla County will also receive $9.6 million in Department of Transportation road improvement grants, facilitating safer and more efficient travel through road network enhancements.

To support ongoing growth and prosperity, a dedicated $10.7 million will be allocated for local option One Cent Sales Tax projects and the acquisition of essential equipment. In a move to bolster public safety, the budget includes provisions for establishing a new fire engine company and staffing a station to serve the east side of the county. Additionally, funding has been secured to add six new law enforcement officers and two E911 dispatchers for the Sheriff's Office.

“In the past three years, we have added 16 new deputy positions at the Sheriff’s Office and 12 new positions at Fire Rescue,” said Commissioner Mike Kemp, “additionally, this year we secured a substantial reduction in the millage rate and when we can give the citizens a break, we need to do that.”

The approval of this historic budget underscores Wakulla County's commitment to improving residents' quality of life, fostering economic growth, and ensuring the safety and well-being of our community members.

“With great pride, we've achieved a significant millage rate reduction for our citizens. While the majority will experience no change in their tax burden, there are those who will enjoy a welcomed decrease.” Said Chairman Ralph Thomas, “This reduction was successfully achieved due to the recent growth we have experienced in Wakulla County.”

The Wakulla County Board of Commissioners is excited about the positive impact these investments will have on the community and looks forward to a brighter future for Wakulla County.
