Wakulla County BOCC Approves the Purchase Agreement of Property Adjoining Medart Recreation Park
CRAWFORDVILLE, Fla – On June 20, 2022, the Wakulla County Board of County Commissioners approved to purchase property for future improvements at Medart Recreation Park. The property, located at the corner of Evalinda Street and Coastal Highway 98, is planned to be a trailhead for the Capital City to the Sea Trail and link the Medart Recreation Park directly to the trail.

Possible future improvements to the park may also include the construction of extra parking, an open-air pavilion, bicycle racks, an informational kiosk, bathrooms, and water stations. Additionally, the property could be used to widen and expand the park’s entrance in the future to improve pedestrian, cyclist, and vehicle safety. Installing a multipurpose path connecting existing park trails and more homes to the Capital City to the Sea Trail is also a goal.

“The rec park is a place where friends gather to play sports, kids hit their first home run, and families stay active, and the Capital City to the Sea Trail is a tremendous amenity for all ages whether used for walking, hiking, or biking. Both are an important part of our community that brings everyone together. Our plans will connect these two important recreational activities together to add experiences for more citizens” said County Administrator David Edwards.

Ownership of this property allows the County to pursue grant opportunities from the federally funded Recreational Trails Program. The Program can help with the construction of the new trailhead and new multi-purpose connecting trail, and could potentially contribute to funding maintenance, restoration, or renovation of existing trails at the park.

Medart Recreation Park is located at 79 Recreation Drive in Crawfordville. The Park has nine baseball fields, two batting cages, two multipurpose fields, two tennis courts, four basketball courts, one playground, and a walking trail of .8 miles.
